Andrew Bell Interview

Andrew Bell

we heard you are currently working on a new book. why about eating?

The book is largely a themed collection of creatures, going through my archives I realized that many of my creatures are either eating or being eaten.

Unfortunately publishing a collection of all 1600+ creatures is a bit unrealistic at the moment, so picking a theme really helps me narrow down my artwork selection. I also really love drawing food and fat things! What better excuse than a book about eating?

Andrew Bell

what do you like to produce more: prints or toys?

Prints are a lot less work and much faster to produce, so it’s near instant gratification… but toys are way more fun!

what appeals to you more, making your own production toys (i.e zliks) or putting your art of ‘platform toys’?

Making my own original productions is a ton of work, but ultimately more satisfying. Working on platforms can be a lot of fun if it is an interesting shape or material, but you don’t always have full control over the final product.

Andrew Bell

can we expect to see anymore OG vinyl of yours in the near future?

I’m working on a few goodies right now…

for me the 20″ dunny you did for the paintball show is by far my favorite custom i’ve seen of yours, where does it rank of the toys you have customized?

It’s up there, it’s fun to work big. I’d say my favorites might be the 19″ LEGO men, mostly because I am so nostalgic for LEGO. The life-size Vader helmet I did this summer was a blast too.

Andrew Bell

do you like taking part in shows like paintball or the vader project where there are several artist takes on one subject matter or do you like having solo shows? and when can we see you in both next?

Group shows are fun and often have interesting themes, but individual work can get lost in them. Solo shows let you really show off and control the whole experience, but it’s hard to do more than one or two a year. I like doing both for different reasons!

My next solo show is in March at Gallery 1988 in LA! I am busy getting things together for that, I don’t plan on leaving my studio much for the next couple of months. There are a few group shows after that I think, but I am too focused on the 1988 show to remember what they are right now!

what was your feeling when you first knew of someone getting a piece of your art tattooed on them forever?

Mostly flattered, although it’s always a little weird!

Andrew Bell

have you achieved any artistic goals at this point in your career?

Sure, but I’m always setting new ones!

is there any aspect of the art world you would like to explore but haven’t gotten a chance to do so yet?

I’d like to do more original sculpture and large-format pieces.

if andrew bell was transported into the colonial days, what would be his profession?

Judging by the etymology of surnames in this country, I’d probably be toiling away as a bellfounder.
